Aapo Huttunen was nominated Everyday Hero of the Year 2012

Aapo Huttunen, 15, from Tuusula was nominated Everyday Hero of the Year 2012. True to the title, he works to prevent accidents every day: at school, at home and in his leisure activities.

Aapo helps prevent accidents and hazards by doing practical things that in themselves are small and mundane. He says that the risk of having an accident in the home can be minimised for instance by tidying up.

– I make sure that the smoke detectors and preliminary fire extinguishing equipment are in working order and that the exits are not blocked,” says Aapo, who has been a member of his local voluntary fire brigade for six years.

His interest in promoting everyday safety is a matter of the heart.

– I have been interested in safety ever since I was a small kid. I tell my friends and their friends about safety at school and elsewhere. Nowadays I talk about it in the social media too,” he explains.

Aapo also takes an active approach to improving safety education at school. He feels that there should definitely be more in the school curriculum about safety matters.

– Starting in the first grade, kids should be taught what to do for instance if there is a fire, and more attention should be paid to how safe their way to and from school is. Schools could also hold theme days, for instance on first aid.

The 112 Day national working group presented the Everyday Hero award to Aapo Huttunen at a ceremony at the Ministry of the Interior at the end of January. Aapo says that the visit to the Ministry and being nominated Everyday Hero of the Year was a fine experience and a point to tick off his list of things to do.
