Children learn to evaluate potential hazards in their environment by observing and drawing conclusions. It is important that safety matters are discussed in class and at school in general. The safety of the school and what affects it can be made concrete for pupils by discussing what makes the classroom or the school yard safe, and what the school regulations and procedures are. Children often know best where the danger spots are in their school, and can give good suggestions for improvement.

Good questions include these: Is the school yard safe? Do all pupils know what to do if someone hurts themselves during recess? Why do the school regulations need to be followed? What should you do if the school’s fire alarm goes off? Does everyone know where to get help in an emergency? What should you do in an emergency and what number should you phone?

School classes can participate in their local 112 Day outside their school. Find your local 112 Day event here.
